According to Corriere dello Sport, Friedkin has been directly involved in both pursuits, with the AS Roma ownership viewing the double acquisition as a statement of intent after the club's return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in seven years.
Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been explicit about his requirements. He wants two wide forwards of genuine quality — one experienced, one developmental — to completely rebuild a final third that produced insufficient creativity and goals across the 2025-26 season.
Greenwood remains the priority. Gasperini has made his desire to sign the 24-year-old England-born winger a persistent point of emphasis since his appointment.
Greenwood has already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract with Roma and is understood to have welcomed the project specifically because of Champions League football. At Marseille he scored 26 goals and contributed 11 assists in 45 appearances last season — his best individual campaign in professional football.
The fee is the obstacle. Marseille value Greenwood at approximately €55 million. Roma's opening offer is expected to be around €40 million plus bonuses. The French club faces UEFA financial fair play pressure and must generate income before June 30, which has been noted by those involved in the negotiation as a potential lever.
Alajbegovic, born in 2007, represents the complementary investment — younger, less proven, but regarded by Gasperini as a talent of exceptional long-term ceiling. Former Juventus and Lazio midfielder Miralem Pjanić has been involved as an intermediary, having brought the Alajbegovic camp to Rome for a visit to the Trigoria training complex. During that visit, the player's representatives were shown the club's facilities and presented with the sporting project. The player's preference for Roma over Fenerbahce — whose Champions League participation requires qualifying rounds — has been communicated clearly.
Bayer Leverkusen value Alajbegovic at approximately €25 million.
To finance both deals, Roma are prepared to sell attacking midfielder Matias Soulé, who is attracting interest from clubs in Spain, England and Germany.
