Roma are preparing to strengthen Gian Piero Gasperini's squad in January, with an attacking winger and potentially a midfielder on the shopping list as the club look to address their lack of depth and maintain their intensity throughout matches.

The Giallorossi have demonstrated that they can compete with Europe's leading sides, but their performances have exposed a recurring problem. They have often started strongly before struggling to sustain their intensity in the second half.

The defeats against Real Madrid and Manchester United, alongside their Serie A performances, have highlighted the physical demands of Gasperini's approach. His football relies on aggressive pressing, individual duels across the pitch and relentless movement, requiring a squad capable of maintaining those standards when the first-choice players tire.

AS Roma's problems have been compounded by injuries, with the absence of important players reducing the manager's options from the bench.

The statistics underline the issue. Eight of the 10 goals Roma have conceded in Serie A this season have come after half-time, while they have suffered four comebacks in 14 matches across competitions. Three of those came after taking a two-goal lead, against Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

January is therefore expected to provide sporting director Tony D'Amico with an opportunity to address the weaknesses.

The priority is an attacking winger, preferably on loan, who can provide greater pace and directness while offering Gasperini another option when the team's energy levels begin to drop.

Chelsea's Jamie Gittens is among the leading candidates. Roma were interested in the winger during the summer and continue to monitor his situation.

Real Madrid forward Endrick remains another ambitious possibility, while Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling and Frosinone's Giorgi Kvernadze are also on the club's radar.

The idea is to repeat the type of recruitment operation that brought Donyell Malen to the Italian capital, adding a player capable of making an immediate impact without committing to an expensive permanent transfer.

Roma could also consider a midfielder with pace and technical quality, giving Gasperini greater flexibility in the centre of the pitch.

The squad is considered stronger than last season, but the club believe further investment is necessary to compete consistently across domestic and European competitions.

The challenge for D'Amico will be finding players who fit the manager's demanding tactical identity and can provide genuine alternatives rather than simply increasing the numbers available.
