Port Vale have signed midfielder Matthew Craig on a permanent three-year deal after his contract at Tottenham Hotspur expired, with the 23-year-old committing to the League One club until the summer of 2029.

Craig came through the academy at Watford before moving to Spurs at the age of 12. He signed his first professional contract at Tottenham in May 2021 and made his Premier League debut two years later, coming off the bench in a 4-1 win over Leeds United in May 2023.

First-team opportunities remained limited at Spurs and Craig spent time on loan in the Football League, building experience at three different levels. He had stints at Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley and Mansfield Town, operating across League One and League Two, and represented Scotland at youth international level.

Port Vale manager Jon Brady believes Craig fits precisely what the club is trying to build.

"Matty fits the profile of player we want to bring to Port Vale," Brady said. "Young, hungry and on an upward trajectory in his career. He has a real desire to improve, works hard every day and is eager to develop, which are qualities that are very important to us."

Brady added that the signing is part of a longer-term plan.

"We believe he has the potential to grow with the football club and make a positive impact both on and off the pitch. We're delighted to welcome him and look forward to working with him as we continue building a competitive and ambitious squad."

Craig arrives with time on his side. At 23, he has Premier League development, Championship and League One experience behind him, and a manager at his new club willing to build around him.

Port Vale finished ninth in League One last season under Brady. The club are targeting a push toward the play-offs in 2026/27, and Craig's signing is part of a deliberate effort to raise the quality of the squad while keeping an eye on the future. Three years on his contract gives both parties the security to build something together.
