Niko Ilicevic has made Bundesliga history at just 16 years and one day, matching Youssoufa Moukoko's record after making his Eintracht Frankfurt debut against Hamburg.

The highly rated midfielder came off the bench during the closing stages of Eintracht Frankfurt's 3-1 victory on Sunday, becoming the joint-youngest player ever to appear in Germany's top flight.

Ilicevic was introduced in the 90th minute, replacing Can Uzun, just one day after celebrating his 16th birthday. That made him exactly the same age as Moukoko when the former Borussia Dortmund forward made his Bundesliga debut against Hertha Berlin in November 2020.

The teenager is the nephew of former Croatia international Ivo Ilicevic, who previously played in the Bundesliga, including for Hamburg.

His appearance was a landmark moment for Frankfurt, but the young midfielder also showed glimpses of his potential during his brief time on the pitch. He registered two efforts at goal shortly after coming on and almost created another opportunity for Jonathan Burkardt.

Ilicevic has already attracted considerable attention through his performances at youth level. He has scored four goals and provided three assists in seven appearances for Frankfurt's Under-19 side this season, while also featuring regularly in the UEFA Youth League last campaign.

He is also part of Germany's Under-17 international set-up and scored the winning goal in a 3-2 friendly victory over England earlier in October.

Frankfurt coach Adi HĂŒtter had indicated before the match that the teenager could feature, although he stressed the importance of managing expectations around such a young player.

"Being part of a Bundesliga squad at the age of 16 is quite extraordinary," HĂŒtter said in the build-up to the game.

The coach also praised Ilicevic's technical ability and his willingness to compete physically, qualities that have helped him progress rapidly through the club's academy.

Frankfurt's victory was secured by Raphael Onyedika and Younes Ebnoutalib, who scored in the second half after an own goal from Warmed Omari and Terem Moffi's equaliser had left the teams level at the break.

But the afternoon will also be remembered for Ilicevic's achievement. He now shares the Bundesliga's youngest-ever appearance record with Moukoko, placing him alongside one of the most notable teenage talents to emerge from German football in recent years.
