Joti Chatzialexiou says his decision to leave Nürnberg for Eintracht Frankfurt was driven by family and personal ties, insisting it was a move towards his hometown club rather than a rejection of the 2. Bundesliga side.

The current Nürnberg sporting director has agreed to take over the equivalent role at Frankfurt, replacing Markus Krösche. The move represents a return to the city where Chatzialexiou grew up, and he explained that the personal significance of the opportunity played a major part in his decision.

"First of all, it was an emotional decision for me – not a decision against the Club, but for my family and for my hometown club, where I grew up," he told Sky.

Chatzialexiou revealed that the approach came relatively recently and that discussions developed quickly before an agreement was reached.

"I was approached recently and then had discussions, which I communicated very transparently in Nürnberg. Then things gathered momentum very quickly and we were able to reach an agreement."

The 1. FC Nürnberg official is expected to begin his new position on February 1, 2027. That means he could remain involved in Nürnberg's business during the January transfer window, helping the club manage the transition before his departure.

He believes that arrangement is realistic and is keen to ensure Nürnberg are not left without support during an important period of the season.

"I think that is realistic, because I believe I can do it and because I don't want to leave the club alone during an important phase. I want to help shape the transition," he explained.

Nürnberg are already searching for a suitable replacement, and Chatzialexiou hopes the process can be handled cooperatively.

"They are also looking in Nürnberg for an adequate replacement, so that we can make the transition work well, hand in hand."

For Eintracht Frankfurt, the appointment brings in a sporting executive with a personal connection to the club and the city. For Chatzialexiou, the move offers the opportunity to return to familiar surroundings while taking on a significant new responsibility.

His comments also underline his intention to fulfil his duties in Nürnberg until the final day of his employment, rather than allowing the impending departure to disrupt the club's plans.
