Comolli takes charge at Pisa after leaving Juventus

Pisa have turned to Damien Comolli to lead their next chapter, appointing the former Juventus executive as president and chief executive as Alexander Knaster looks to build a more internationally focused structure at the club.

The announcement brings Giuseppe Corrado and Giovanni Corrado’s decade-long involvement with Pisa to an end. The club confirmed that Comolli has signed an initial three-year contract and will join its board, while the Corrados’ 25% shareholding is set to be bought out.

Knaster, Pisa’s majority shareholder, said the club had reached a point where it needed to move into a new phase of development. He believes Comolli’s experience across different football environments can help deliver that ambition.

The appointment also offers Comolli an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in Italian football after his time at Juventus ended. His previous work at Toulouse, however, provides a more encouraging example of what he can achieve when given responsibility for shaping a club’s direction.

Toulouse provides the blueprint

Comolli arrived at Toulouse in 2020 under RedBird Capital Partners and was given significant influence over the club’s sporting strategy. The team won promotion to Ligue 1 in 2022, then finished 13th in their first season back in the top flight.

The defining moment came in April 2023, when Toulouse beat Nantes 5-1 in the Coupe de France final to claim the club’s first major trophy of that kind in the modern era. The victory secured European football and gave the club a platform to grow beyond its domestic campaign.

Toulouse subsequently reached the Europa League knockout play-offs in 2023-24, including a memorable 3-2 home victory over Liverpool. They finished 11th in Ligue 1 that season, demonstrating that the cup success had not been an isolated achievement.

Comolli’s approach was associated with data-led recruitment and finding value in the transfer market. Thijs Dallinga was one example: Toulouse signed the Dutch striker from Excelsior in 2022 before selling him to Bologna in 2024 for a substantially higher fee.

A new structure at Pisa

Pisa’s immediate transition is not expected to involve a wholesale change of personnel. Sporting director Leonardo Gabbanini is set to remain in place, as is head coach Paolo Bianco, allowing Comolli to begin his work without automatically replacing the existing football leadership.

The task is to build on the foundations already established under Knaster and create the organisation needed for sustainable progress. The club has also identified a new training facility as part of its development plans.

Comolli’s Toulouse record gives Pisa grounds for optimism, but repeating that progress in a different league and structure will require time. His appointment marks a clear change in leadership; the challenge now is to turn the club’s ambitions into lasting results and promotion from Serie B.
