Twente centre-back Ruud Nijstad, one of the brightest young talents in Dutch football, has revealed that Barcelona monitored his progress closely before he ultimately chose to extend his contract with the Eredivisie club.

The 18-year-old also opened up on his admiration for Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí and his hope of one day forming a central defensive partnership with him.

Speaking to Sportnieuws, Nijstad confirmed that Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt and PSV had also shown interest in recent months, but he decided his future lay in Enschede for now. "I had a lot of doubts.

"Going abroad would have been a leap into the unknown, especially because PSV have been the best club in the Netherlands in recent years... I found it very, very difficult.

"In the end, I let myself be guided mainly by the advice of my parents, my agents, my girlfriend and some team-mates," he explained.

Nijstad did not hide his admiration for Cubarsí, the Barcelona academy graduate who at just 19 is already a regular for both club and country and will feature in Sunday's World Cup final for Spain.

"I saw him play against Cristiano Ronaldo and I really enjoyed watching him. Playing at Barcelona and forming a central defensive partnership with Cubarsí would of course be my ultimate goal. But for now I want to keep developing at Twente. I still have a lot to learn here," he said.

The comments leave the door open to a possible future at Camp Nou, even if Nijstad's immediate priority remains gaining experience and continuing his development in the Eredivisie rather than making an immediate move to one of Europe's biggest clubs.

His willingness to publicly discuss both the interest he has received and his long-term ambitions suggests a player fully aware of his growing reputation, even as he insists he is not yet ready to make the jump that so many of his contemporaries across Dutch football have already made or are actively pursuing this summer.

For now, Twente will be satisfied to have fended off interest from four major European clubs to keep hold of one of their most promising academy products for at least another season.
