Athletic Bilbao shut down Barcelona interest in Laporte

Athletic Club have moved to firmly deny any prospect of selling Aymeric Laporte to Barcelona this summer, after the centre-back's outstanding performances at the World Cup fuelled intense speculation linking him with a return to Spanish football.

Laporte, 32, has been strongly tipped for a Camp Nou move in recent days, but Athletic's director of football has ruled it out entirely.

"We have not received any contact, nor any official or even unofficial offer, from Barcelona's board regarding the signing of Aymeric Laporte. At this moment there are no negotiations of any kind between the two clubs, and everything being circulated in the various media outlets is nothing more than rumours that have no connection to reality," said Mikel González in comments to 365Scores.

González went on to stress the central role Laporte is expected to play for Athletic next season.

"Laporte is one of the key elements in the team's project for the new season, and we have great confidence in his technical ability and accumulated experience, which is why we have never considered his departure.

"Aymeric Laporte will stay with us and will not leave during the current summer transfer window, because we consider him a key player and an important element within the team," he said.

The comments come as Athletic prepare for a season that will begin with a LaLiga opener against Barcelona at Camp Nou, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the speculation surrounding one of their most important defenders. Laporte returned to Bilbao in 2023 after a lengthy spell at Manchester City, where he won multiple Premier League titles, and has since re-established himself as a first-choice centre-back for both club and country.

His performances for Spain at this summer's World Cup have only sharpened outside interest, with his experience and composure on the ball making him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen at centre-back.

Athletic, however, appear determined to keep their squad intact after a season that saw them return to the Champions League, and González's comments leave little room for ambiguity over the club's stance heading into the closing weeks of the transfer window.

Laporte's contract situation had already made him a subject of transfer chatter even before his World Cup exploits, but González's intervention appears designed to close down the story before it gains further momentum.

Athletic Club have shown in recent years that they are willing to resist approaches for key players when it does not suit their sporting project, and the tone of González's comments suggests the club see Laporte as central to their ambitions of competing on multiple fronts again next season, both domestically and in Europe.
