Trubin, 24, already has a connection to Roberto De Zerbi — the two worked together at Shakhtar Donetsk before the Italian left Ukraine in 2022. Trubin has spoken publicly about the impact De Zerbi had on his development and the desire to work with him again. That prior relationship gives Tottenham a meaningful advantage over any competing clubs.
The Ukraine goalkeeper made 50 competitive appearances for Benfica this season, keeping 13 clean sheets in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and conceding just 20 goals in 32 league matches. His save percentage of 75.51 per cent was among the best in Europe. He also featured in all 14 of Benfica's Champions League appearances and scored a dramatic stoppage-time headed goal against Real Madrid that secured the club's place in the knockout stages.
His release clause stands at €100 million — a figure Benfica have set as a ceiling, not a target. The Lisbon club are understood to be open to negotiating a fee significantly below that, with reports from Portugal suggesting a deal in the region of €40 million to €45 million is realistic.
The move is contingent on Vicario leaving. The Italy goalkeeper, signed from Empoli for £17 million in 2023, has been linked with Inter Milan throughout the season. He was De Zerbi's first-choice keeper upon the Italian's appointment in March but his position at the club has since come under scrutiny, with reports suggesting the new manager has reservations about his long-term suitability. Inter's interest remains live.
Tottenham are also monitoring Brighton's Bart Verbruggen as a goalkeeping alternative, but Trubin's combination of age, European pedigree and existing relationship with De Zerbi makes him the more attractive option.
His contract at Benfica runs until June 2028. He has 27 senior caps for Ukraine and is expected to feature in their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures before the World Cup break.
