With the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain now just days away, Unai Emery's side wrapped up their Asia tour by testing themselves against another Champions League outfit at the Kai Tak Stadium, and centre-back Pau Torres believes the exercise did exactly what was needed.
"It was a really good game, a really good test for us to prepare for the final next week," he said. "I think we played well against a really good team.
"The first half was more or less equal; they scored with a set piece and we need to improve that part, correct things. We have now a couple of days to prepare for the final, but I think we need to play like today."
Aston Villa ultimately went down 2-1, with Kim Min-jae heading Bayern in front before Luis Díaz doubled the German champions' lead with a well-taken second-half strike. João Gomes hauled Villa back into the contest with a superb effort of his own, and only a smart Manuel Neuer save denied Tammy Abraham a stoppage-time equaliser.
For Torres, the value lay less in the result than in the level of opposition on offer in the air-conditioned surroundings of Hong Kong's newest stadium.
"It's always good to play against one team like them; it's always good to play during the pre-season to test ourselves and to know, more or less, in which level we are," he said. "I think we competed really well today, and this is the work that we need to do in the rest of the season."
The Bayern Munich match rounded off a demanding stretch of three fixtures and numerous training sessions across Jakarta, Bangkok and Hong Kong, and Torres was keen to reflect on the trip beyond the football itself.
"We had a really good welcome in each country," he said. "We felt all the support from the fans in Asia, and we are happy to be here after three years in a row, in the USA, now here in Asia. We are happy to be here, to know different countries, different cultures, and for us it's been good."
Villa now turn their attention fully to Wednesday's meeting with PSG in the Super Cup.
