Sivera delighted after saving Alavés in difficult week and another winless outing

Antonio Sivera was the standout performer as Deportivo Alavés drew 0-0 with Sevilla, saving a first-half penalty to help his side end a difficult week with a point.

The Babazorros arrived at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán looking to respond after conceding six goals against Barcelona six days earlier. Although they were unable to end their two-month wait for a victory, they produced a much-improved defensive performance to take something from the encounter.

Sivera was central to that recovery, denying Rubén Vargas from the penalty spot in the first half to preserve the goalless scoreline.

“It was the most decisive action of the entire match. We had studied it very well this morning and, thank God, it worked out for us again. We have saved another penalty, which allows the team to pick up another point,” the goalkeeper said.

The Alavés captain was pleased with the resilience shown by his teammates, particularly given the difficult run of results that has left them searching for a victory.

“There have been many rounds without winning, but those of us who have been here for a long time know that every point counts. It is one less point we need to achieve our objective.

“Today we came to a difficult ground, where Sevilla were in a good run of form, and we knew how to fight for a point that is important for us.”

### A clean sheet after Barcelona setback

The draw was not the result Alavés had hoped for before the international break, but it represented a response after the heavy defeat at Camp Nou.

Sivera's penalty save proved particularly important, with Sevilla increasing the pressure after the interval. The hosts created several opportunities but could not find a way past the goalkeeper and his defence.

For Alavés, the priority was to restore some confidence after conceding six times against Barcelona. They did not produce their best football in possession, but their defensive organisation ensured they left Seville with something to show for their efforts.

Sivera also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Jesús de Miguel, whose death had cast a shadow over Spanish football in recent days.

The goalkeeper said playing was the best way for the team to honour his memory, while sending his condolences to the striker's family.

“These have been difficult days, and the best way to honour his name was to play, to transmit that passion which I am sure reached him up there, and to send a hug to his family because they are surely going through a very difficult time.”

Alavés remain without a win, but Sivera's contribution ensured they avoided another damaging result and could take a valuable point into the international break.
