Sevilla were frustrated by Deportivo Alavés in a goalless draw at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, with Antonio Sivera saving a penalty to deny the hosts.

The visitors defended resolutely to secure a point, while Sevilla were left reflecting on missed opportunities after failing to turn their second-half pressure into a winning goal.

Alavés coach Quique Sánchez Flores praised his players' defensive effort, highlighting the intensity of the contest and the importance of keeping a clean sheet.

“It was a match that demanded very high intensity and aggression from us. We matched the opposition in that respect, which allowed us to get a point. Sevilla are a team that press hard, and their supporters do too.

“We were very good defensively and kept a clean sheet. It is our fourth in 12 matches. That is very good compared with last season, when we managed five. We have to give the players credit for their effort.”

Sevilla had the opportunity to take control from the penalty spot, but Sivera denied them, producing another important intervention for Alavés.

Sánchez Flores questioned the decision to award the spot-kick while praising his goalkeeper, who had also saved a penalty against Athletic Club in Bilbao.

“I respect the work of the officials, but I believe it was a penalty that should not have been given. It is the second penalty Sivera has saved. He stopped one in Bilbao, on the same side, and these are actions worth a goal and which bring points.”

Sevilla manager Luis García Plaza felt his team had done enough to win, particularly after the interval, but admitted that a lack of accuracy in front of goal had proved costly.

“In the second half we deserved to win comfortably, and in the first half we had the penalty. It was a little difficult for us at the beginning, but I always say it is not easy to be vastly superior throughout an entire match.

“We were not worse, we were simply evenly matched. We were very deserving of victory, but this game is about scoring goals.”

The Sevilla coach also pointed to the lack of a decisive contribution from his attacking players.

“We have lacked a player who might be capable of changing the match, and we have not been accurate enough with the chances we had. We did not create 20 opportunities either.

“Neither Stassin nor Isaac nor Robbie were clinical in front of goal.”

García Plaza believed his side had produced one of their best second-half performances of the season, but acknowledged that the failure to score made that assessment difficult to celebrate.

“The players say it was one of the best second halves of the league season. The problem is that we do not score. From the penalty onwards, I think we could have scored four or five goals.”

He also praised defender Sangante, explaining that his substitution was influenced by a booking and the threat posed by Alavés' two powerful forwards.

For Sánchez Flores, the point was a reward for defensive discipline and another clean sheet, while Sevilla were left to regret the missed penalty and their inability to convert second-half pressure into three points.
