Hamburg SV have reportedly included clauses in Mario Vušković’s contract that could extend his stay at the club until 2030, with the defender approaching his return from a four-year doping suspension.

According to the Hamburger Abendblatt, Vušković’s current agreement is due to run until 2027, but it could automatically be extended to 2028 once he is named in Hamburg’s squad for a Bundesliga match. He would not need to take the field for that first extension to be triggered.

A further clause could add another two years to the deal if the 24-year-old reaches a specified number of league appearances, playing more than 45 minutes in each qualifying match. The precise number of appearances required has not been disclosed.

Vušković’s suspension is due to expire in November, allowing him to resume competitive football after a lengthy absence. Hamburg have continued to support the Croatian defender during that period and are now preparing for his return to the squad.

The initial extension mechanism would give the club a degree of protection while also providing Vušković with a route towards a longer commitment. Being named in a league matchday squad would be enough to extend the contract by one year, while the further clause would depend on his ability to build up substantial playing time.

The conditions also leave room for Vušković to meet the appearance threshold across the current season or the following campaign. That could prove important as he works back towards full match fitness after spending years unable to play competitive football.

Hamburg are planning a friendly against Vušković’s former club Hajduk Split for 15 November, offering the defender a potential first appearance in front of supporters after his suspension ends. His first competitive return would come later, subject to selection and fitness.

The reported terms underline Hamburg’s intention to retain Vušković beyond his immediate comeback, while tying the longer extension to his involvement on the pitch. The first clause could take effect relatively quickly once he is named in a league squad; the route to 2030 depends on reaching the agreed appearance target.

Neither the precise number of qualifying appearances nor the full contractual wording has been made public. The details reported by the Hamburger Abendblatt therefore outline the possible extensions, rather than confirming that either has already been activated.
