Tottenham’s Tonali says squad must build on recent wins

Tottenham midfielder Sandro Tonali says Spurs must build on their first Premier League win after a difficult start, with back-to-back victories lifting the mood.

In comments to Sky Italia, Tonali described the opening weeks as a period of growth rather than something the squad should continue to dwell on.

“Monday was a kind of closing point for this first part of the season. It has been a constant process of development. We should not focus on how we started, but instead take the positives. The performances have been excellent, and everyone loves the coach, who works harder than anyone else here at Tottenham.”

The midfielder was referring to head coach Roberto De Zerbi, whose side had struggled to turn performances into points. Tottenham spent heavily during the summer, but their start had increased pressure to show progress quickly.

The victory over Coventry changed the mood, with James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scoring in a 3-1 win. Jack Rudoni had equalised early in the second half before Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead.

Tonali said the squad had begun to look more connected, but warned that one result could not be treated as proof that the job was done.

“We know we have to give everything because we have not achieved anything yet. Since last week, we have become much more of a team. We cannot stand still. Now we have a difficult away match.

"We have to keep a positive attitude and play our football.”

Tottenham followed that win by beating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with a Mike Penders own goal and Mathys Tel’s late strike settling the London derby. The result gave De Zerbi’s side a second league win in a week.

At Stamford Bridge, Spurs kept Chelsea at bay for long spells and took advantage of a late own goal before Tel’s individual finish sealed the points. The performance gave the squad further evidence that its improvement could translate into results away from home.

Tonali also spoke warmly about AC Milan, the club he left in 2023 to join Newcastle United before moving to Tottenham this summer.

“Milan will always be my favourite team, no matter how much time passes. Even in 20 years, I will continue to follow them whenever my commitments allow, because that feeling will never change.”

The midfielder had registered one assist in seven appearances for Tottenham before the Chelsea fixture. His focus now is to help turn the recent results into a more consistent run of performances.
