The German coach was relieved of his duties on November 2 after two and a half years in charge, with the club deciding that a change was needed. Runjaic subsequently addressed supporters in an open letter published through Udinese's official channels.
He admitted that leaving the club was difficult, having developed a strong connection with both the team and the city during his time in Friuli.
“The current situation and my subsequent departure have caused me much pain. Over the last two and a half years, Udine has truly become a home, both the club and the city itself,” he wrote.
“The many encounters, shared experiences, memories and the people I had the privilege of meeting mean a great deal to me and will always remain special.”
Despite his disappointment, Runjaic said he understood the decision taken by the club's management and recognised the need for a fresh start.
“Nevertheless, I understand and respect the management's decision. There is now a need for fresh momentum and a collective effort from everyone,” he continued.
“The club, the team, the Curva Nord and all the fans must come together and pull in the same direction, just as I witnessed and came to appreciate during my time here.”
Runjaic also made a point of thanking those who had supported him throughout his spell at Udinese, including his coaching staff, club employees, the players and the supporters.
He specifically acknowledged the management led by Gino Pozzo, as well as the contribution of the club's fanbase.
“I’m deeply grateful for everything I experienced in Udine, and I’d like to thank everyone who accompanied and supported me along this journey, and for putting their trust in me,” he said.
That gratitude extended to his staff, the club's employees, the team, the Curva Nord and all Udinese supporters.
Runjaic finished by wishing the club well for the challenges ahead, stressing the importance of unity and also sending his best wishes to president Giampaolo Pozzo, who he hopes will make a swift recovery.
“Udinese will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish the team every success and, above all, that they stick together for the challenges that lie ahead,” he wrote.
“I also wish our president, Giampaolo Pozzo, strength and a speedy recovery.”
The farewell brought an emotional end to Runjaic's time in Udine, where he had spent more than two years before the club decided to make a change.
