Juventus confirmed the terms in an official statement: "Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces it has reached an agreement with ACF Fiorentina for the temporary transfer, until 30 June 2027, of the sporting rights of player Joao Mario Neto Lopes for a fee of €1.8m, payable in a single instalment. The agreement also grants Fiorentina the option to acquire the player's rights permanently for a further €9.5m, payable over three instalments."
Fiorentina's own statement filled in his background: born in São João da Madeira, Portugal, on 3 January 2000, Joao Mario came through Porto's youth system before making 181 appearances for the Dragões, scoring five goals and providing 26 assists across the Portuguese league, Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup, winning two league titles, four Portuguese Cups, one League Cup and three Portuguese Super Cups along the way.
In Italy he has worn the shirts of Juventus and Bologna, making 20 Serie A appearances and scoring once for the Rossoblù, and has earned three senior caps for Portugal.
Speaking to the club's official channels, Joao Mario made clear how pleased he was with the move: "I can't wait to wear the purple shirt out on the pitch. I'm very happy to be here, Fiorentina is a great club. I can't wait for the new season to start and to achieve lots of success together."
He was also struck by the club's training facilities: "Viola Park really surprised me, it's a first-class facility; here we have everything we need to work at our best. I hope it's a season full of success."
The move was not motivated by any existing connections in the squad.
"No, I didn't know any of my new team-mates, I just know there are some Brazilians who speak my language. I can't wait to meet them all," he said. "Fiorentina's history convinced me to wear this shirt, but so did the city and the project that was presented to me. It was definitely an easy choice for me."
He signed off with a message for the supporters: "I can't wait to see them at the stadium, and we'll work hard to give them plenty of joy over the course of next season."
