Werder Bremen have ended speculation over Jens Stage's future by confirming the Danish midfielder will see out the transfer window at the Weser-Stadion. Clemens Fritz has drawn a line under weeks of rumour by stating unequivocally that the 29-year-old is going nowhere.
"We will not be dropping Jens off this summer. The matter is finally settled. That's clearly how it was discussed with him," Fritz told DeichStube.
Stage had emerged as a target for both TSG Hoffenheim and Panathinaikos Athens in recent weeks, yet neither club could reach an agreement with Werder over a transfer fee. Werder had imposed their own cut-off point to settle the matter before competitive action resumed, and that deadline has now passed with Stage still on their books.
The midfielder extended his contract in Bremen until 2028 at the end of last year and has established himself as a central figure in Ole Werner's side. Fritz underlined Stage's continued importance by describing him as an "undisputed leader" for the campaign ahead.
"Stage continues to fully identify with Werder, is enormously important for us in sporting terms and will also be an undisputed leader for us in the new season," Fritz added.
Stage has spent three and a half years at the Weser-Stadion since joining from Copenhagen in January 2022 and has grown into one of the most influential players in the squad. Last season he was Werder's top scorer with 10 Bundesliga goals, a remarkable return for a player deployed primarily in a deeper midfield role alongside Senne Lynen. His performances also saw him named the club's Player of the Season for the second consecutive campaign.
The Dane's form had naturally attracted attention from elsewhere, with Hoffenheim viewing him as a potential replacement for Wouter Burger and Panathinaikos hoping to lure him back to continental competition. Werder, however, were always reluctant to part with their vice-captain and the failure of either club to meet their asking price has allowed them to retain a player Fritz describes as the "heart" of the team.
Stage has also become a regular feature in the Denmark national team setup, earning his second senior cap earlier this year. His combination of tactical discipline and late-arriving goal threat makes him a rare commodity in the Bundesliga midfield market.
