Girona have completed the signing of midfielder Izan González from UE Cornellà, beating competition from several other clubs to land the 21-year-old as the Catalan side plan for life in La Liga next season.

Girona, with four matches remaining, hold a four-point cushion above the relegation zone.

The deal was reported by journalist Nil Solà on Cadena SER's Catalan programme Què t'hi Jugues. González, born in Blanes in Girona province, has signed a long-term contract with the club and is considered a strategic first-team signing rather than an academy addition — head coach Míchel confirmed he is a player earmarked for the senior squad.

González joined Cornellà's youth setup in 2022 and has worked his way through successive levels of Spanish football with notable consistency.

After impressing at Primera RFEF level with CE Europa in the first half of the season, Cornellà recalled him in January and immediately sent him on loan to Granada in the Segunda División, where he has made 14 appearances — scoring once and assisting once — in a move deliberately designed to smooth the path toward a Girona transfer.

The 21-year-old is regarded as an intelligent and versatile central midfielder capable of operating in multiple roles across the middle of the pitch. His physical development and ability to adapt to different systems attracted interest from Espanyol and Barcelona before Girona moved decisively to secure his signature.

Should Girona maintain their La Liga status, González is expected to feature regularly under Míchel from the start of next season, completing a journey through every tier of Spanish football from youth football to the top flight in the space of three years.
