Head coach Daniele De Rossi had already announced the news publicly after Genoa's draw with Fiorentina, and the club followed up with an official statement from Genoa Cricket and Football Club in tribute to the 33-year-old.
"Thank you Ruslan for this wonderful adventure lived with the red and blue stitched on your skin. In good times and bad, your determination and love for the shirt will remain indelible. All of Genoa sends you a warm farewell, ready to give you a standing ovation in what has been, and will remain for years to come, your home. From the beginning, forever."
Malinovskyi joined Genoa from Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2023. In three seasons at Marassi, the former Atalanta and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder scored 10 goals and established himself as one of the most technically gifted players to represent the club in recent years. His powerful left foot, vision in tight spaces and ability to unlock defences made him a consistent match-winner in moments when Genoa needed him most.
De Rossi was emotional when asked how Malinovskyi could be replaced.
"You don't replace him with a copy of Ruslan. A player like him doesn't exist. He gives you the certainty of six or seven matches won per year, which are important. Difficult to replace."
He also confirmed that Malinovskyi will start on Sunday to give him the send-off he deserves.
Malinovskyi has agreed a three-year deal with Trabzonspor, the same Turkish club who currently have AndrΓ© Onana on loan from Manchester United. His contract at Genoa expires on June 30.
The Ukrainian leaves Italian football after spells at Atalanta between 2019 and 2022, Marseille, and Genoa. He has earned 62 caps for Ukraine and represented the country at the 2020 European Championship.
