Fiorentina terminate Lamptey's contract after ACL injury ends his Florence nightmare

Fiorentina have terminated Tariq Lamptey's contract by mutual consent after the former Brighton and Chelsea right-back played just 25 minutes of football across two appearances following an ACL injury sustained in September.

The Daily Mail reported the termination, with neither club nor player issuing a public statement. Fiorentina had previously described Lamptey's situation as a "complex medical situation" — a careful piece of framing that reflected the uncertainty around his recovery timeline.

Lamptey, 25, joined Fiorentina from Brighton for £5million last summer on a three-year deal, hopeful that a move to Serie A would give him the platform to rediscover the form that first made him one of English football's most exciting full-backs. He made his debut off the bench against Napoli, lasting four minutes. Three weeks later, he started against Como, tore his anterior cruciate ligament after 21 minutes and did not play again.

He missed 45 consecutive matches. The injury was the latest chapter in a career repeatedly disrupted by physical setbacks. At Brighton, persistent knee and hamstring problems reduced him from a first-choice starter to a peripheral figure, eventually leading to his departure for Fiorentina.

Lamptey broke through under former Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard in 2019, making his debut at 19 before moving to Brighton for £3million. He represented England at Under-18 and Under-21 level before switching his international allegiance to Ghana, for whom he became a senior international. He will not be available for Ghana's World Cup campaign this summer following the ACL setback.

He is now a free agent and will need to convince potential suitors that he is physically ready to resume his career at the level his talent suggested. The extent of his rehabilitation and whether he is now fully fit will be the primary questions any club needs answered before committing.

At 25, Lamptey has time to rebuild. The ceiling of his ability when healthy has never been in question. Whether his body will allow him to reach it has been the source of frustration for everyone who has watched him, including himself.
