The Galician club have endured painful years in the Spanish game, dropping as far as the third tier before finally clawing their way back to the elite this season. With that promotion secured, Deportivo are looking to build a squad capable of competing, restoring the club to the level its history suggests it belongs.
They have already pulled off a surprise coup by signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as their marquee addition, but the ambition does not stop there. According to journalist Ángel García, Deportivo are now monitoring the situation of Porto winger Borja Sainz, 25.
The Basque forward is coming off a season in which he proved a regular source of impact for the Portuguese side, featuring prominently for a Porto team that claimed the Primeira Liga title. He is also attracting interest from Athletic Club, and prising him away from the Estádio do Dragão will not be straightforward.
Porto are demanding a fee of around €20m for the winger, and sources at Deportivo La Coruna are well aware of how difficult it will be to convince the Portuguese club to sell one of their most productive attacking players.
Sainz, who came through Athletic Club's academy at Lezama before leaving the Basque club at 17, arrived at Porto from Norwich City for an initial €13.3m last year and has since seen his valuation rise. He is contracted at the Estádio do Dragão until 2030.
Any move for Sainz would represent a significant statement of intent from Riazor, given his growing reputation in Portugal and the competition already circling him.
