Bayern chief defends Harry Kane extension after Hamann criticism

Christoph Freund has defended Bayern's decision to extend Harry Kane's contract, insisting the club are convinced he can maintain his level over the coming seasons.

Bayern Munich's sporting director was responding to criticism from television pundit Dietmar Hamann, who questioned whether the club had taken a risk by committing to the England captain for a further period.

Kane, 33, has signed a new deal keeping him at the Allianz Arena until June 2029. Hamann had questioned whether the striker could continue scoring at the same rate over the next three years, describing the extension as a risk.

Freund strongly disagreed when asked about the comments at Bayern's press conference.

β€œHe has exceeded everything that experts predicted. We are absolutely convinced that, with his attitude and personality, he will maintain his level and be good for us,” Freund said.

The sporting director made clear that Bayern would not have offered Kane a new contract if they had reservations about his future contribution.

β€œIf we weren't convinced of that, we wouldn't have extended his contract. The truth is on the pitch. I am convinced he will show that over the next few years as well.”

Hamann had questioned the decision during an appearance on Sky, saying: β€œWhether he will continue to score so many goals over the next three years remains to be seen. There is a certain risk.”

Bayern announced Kane's extension on Thursday, securing the future of a player who has become central to their attack since arriving from Tottenham in 2023. The new agreement runs until June 30, 2029.

The club confirmed that Kane has scored 156 goals in 161 competitive appearances in Munich. He has also won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and two German Super Cups during his time at the club.

The new contract followed Kane's recognition as the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner. Bayern have made clear that they view him as a leading figure in their plans, while Freund's response shows the club are not concerned by questions over his age or the length of the commitment.
