Cordón steps aside as new Sevilla era begins, with Maupay among those saying goodbye

Antonio Cordón has agreed to leave Sevilla without compensation, forgoing the remaining two years of his contract to smooth the transition to a new ownership era.

The club's sale to Five Eleven Capital and the incoming influence of Sergio Ramos is reshaping everything from the boardroom down.

The departure of Cordón, 52, from Extremadura, was confirmed by COPE Sevilla and subsequently reported across multiple outlets. He had been in post since joining from Five Eleven Capital itself last summer to replace Víctor Orta, and his exit clears the path for Marc Boixasa — the current chief football officer at Five Eleven — to take on the sporting director role. Boixasa brings experience at Manchester City's group structure, FC Barcelona and the Saudi league.

Cordón timed the announcement carefully, holding back from making it public while the team still needed points. Sevilla secured survival with a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid at the Sánchez-Pizjuán on Sunday — results elsewhere confirming they would remain in La Liga with one round still to play.

His tenure was brief but conducted under extraordinary financial pressure. The club's budget was crippled when he arrived. He raised money by selling Loïc Badé and Dodi Lukebakio, negotiated wage reductions with Adnan Januzaj and Marcao without damaging squad morale, promoted academy players into the first team and overhauled the medical department. The club spent just €250,000 on transfer fees across the entire window.

His key signing was goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos. Alexis and Neal Maupay, brought in on loan in January, both played important roles in the final push for survival. The decision to appoint Matías Almeyda as head coach proved unsuccessful — he was sacked before the season's end — but Luis García Plaza steadied the ship and the club stayed up.

Maupay posted his own farewell on Instagram after Sunday's match, confirming he would not be returning beyond his loan from Olympique de Marseille.

"Although today we wanted the win and couldn't get it, we have confirmed the objective of staying in the top flight after some very intense final weeks. I wanted to thank the fans for the warmth and support they have shown me from the first day.

"Wearing the Sevilla shirt, especially at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, has been a privilege. I have always given everything on the pitch. Now it's time to close the season in the best way possible in Vigo. To all Sevillistas — it has been a genuine pleasure to enjoy this club, which I will always carry in my heart."

The French-Argentine forward, 28, arrived in January and was initially left out of García Plaza's first three squads before coming to terms with the new manager and earning a regular place.

"When I arrived, Neal was a specific signing of Matías and he thought — I think — 'let's see what happens with me'," García Plaza explained. "He came to me the following week and said 'Coach, I'm going full'. And he has been a starter ever since."

Cordón also leaves with the signings of Sanganté and Juan Iglesias already completed for next season. The arrival of Patrik Mercado remains in doubt following a serious knee injury. Captaincy renewals for Nemanja Gudelj and others remain pending as the new ownership takes over.
