Arsenal's interest in the teenager was first reported earlier this year, when Ajax were also credited with tracking his progress. According to Brazilian outlet Lance!, representatives of both London clubs have watched Iago since this year's Copa São Paulo, Brazil's Under-20 youth tournament, with his performances there catching their eye before both clubs continued to follow his development.
There is now considerably more for scouts to assess. Iago has progressed from training alongside Corinthians' first team to starting away to Flamengo, the Brazilian league leaders, at the Maracanã. Corinthians lost the match 2-1, but the teenager was one of the standout performers on the night, contributing 14 defensive actions on his senior debut.
Iago was first promoted into the senior setup by then-manager Dorival Júnior earlier this year, before continuing to train with the group and make matchday squads under his successor, Fernando Diniz. Diniz's decision to hand him a full debut against Flamengo represented a significant step up from the reserve-team football in which he first drew attention.
Corinthians converted Iago from futsal, where he played as a pivot, into a centre-back as he transitioned to the full-sized game. He became an Under-17 starter earlier than the club had expected for his age in 2025, and a trip to Spain for the Andalusia Tournament, where his side faced Real Madrid and Barcelona, further raised his profile.
His numbers from defence stand out. Iago has scored four goals and provided two assists in 25 appearances for Corinthians' Under-20s, adding nine goals in 40 matches at Under-17 level, for a combined 13 goals in 65 youth appearances.
Corinthians have already moved to protect their asset, with Iago signing a contract amendment last year that runs until April 2028. His release clause stands at €10.5 million domestically, rising to €100 million for clubs outside Brazil. His career is managed by agent Giuliano Bertolucci, who is also overseeing his transition into the professional game.
Chelsea's involvement gives Arsenal a familiar Premier League rival to contend with, and the fact both clubs have tracked Iago since the Copinha suggests their interest runs deeper than a single eye-catching display against Brazilian football's biggest name.
