Cagliari have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Jacopo Fazzini, who leaves Fiorentina after just one season to join on loan with an obligation to buy.

The Sardinian club confirmed the move in an official statement, with the buy option reported to be set at around €8m. Sporting director Pietro Accardi, who worked with Fazzini during their time together at Empoli, is understood to have played a key role in driving the deal through, with Cagliari beating Parma to his signature after the Emilian club had appeared to be in pole position.

Born in Massa, the 23-year-old came through Empoli's academy, winning the Primavera title in 2020-21 before making his senior debut in the Coppa Italia against Inter in January 2022. He made his Serie A bow that August against Spezia and quickly established himself, playing 21 times in his first top-flight season.

The 2023-24 campaign marked his breakthrough, with 31 appearances and his first professional goal, scored against Sassuolo, cementing his reputation as one of the most promising young Italians in Serie A.

Fazzini went on to record six goals and two assists in 22 appearances during the 2024-25 season before moving to Fiorentina, where he made 32 appearances across the league, Coppa Italia and Europa League, helping the Viola reach the quarter-finals of the latter competition. He has also featured for Italy's youth sides, most recently at last summer's European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia.

A versatile midfielder, Fazzini can operate both as a central midfielder and as an attacking playmaker thanks to his technical and athletic qualities. Cagliari have highlighted his agility, sharp game intelligence, dribbling and knack for late runs into the box as key attributes that should strengthen head coach Fabio Pisacane's midfield options for the season ahead.

The move represents something of a fresh start for Fazzini after a first season at Fiorentina that saw his opportunities become more limited than at Empoli, where he had established himself as a regular starter.

Cagliari's willingness to offer a clear pathway into the side, combined with the pre-existing relationship with Accardi, is understood to have been decisive in persuading both player and parent club that a switch to Sardinia made sense for all parties.

Fazzini is expected to undergo a medical before completing the formalities of his move, after which he will link up with his new teammates as Cagliari continue preparations for the new Serie A season. The loan-with-obligation structure gives the Sardinian club time to integrate the midfielder into their plans before the buy clause becomes binding at the end of the campaign.
