Brian Brobbey has signed a new long-term contract with Sunderland, committing his future to the club until 2031 after making an immediate impact.

The Dutch international joined the Black Cats from Ajax in September 2025 and has established himself as an important part of their forward line, bringing strength, pace and a physical presence to the attack.

One of his standout moments came in September, when he scored a hat-trick against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Although Sunderland lost an extraordinary 5-3 encounter, Brobbey became the first player to score a Premier League hat-trick for the club since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

He has now made 40 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland, scoring 10 goals, and the new agreement provides a significant commitment from both player and club.

Brobbey said he was pleased with the confidence Sunderland had shown in him and wants to continue developing during his time on Wearside.

“I’m really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me. Since I arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player,” he said.

The 24-year-old also reflected on the club's return to European football, an achievement in which he has played his part.

“Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege. Having played my part in helping this club qualify for European competition is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s an achievement that will always be part of the club’s history,” he added.

Brobbey believes there is still considerable room for improvement and has set himself the target of continuing to contribute goals and performances for the team.

“I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day. I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of.”

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the new contract reflected a shared belief in the club's future and their desire to keep progressing.

“We are delighted that Brian has committed his future to Sunderland. This agreement reflects a shared belief in what we can achieve together and a mutual commitment to keep progressing,” he said.

Ghisolfi also believes the forward has more to offer and emphasised the club's responsibility to support his development.

“Brian has important qualities, and we believe there is much more to come from him. Our responsibility is to support his development and challenge him every day, so he can fulfil his potential and help the team succeed.”

He added that Brobbey fits the profile of the players Sunderland want to build around as they look to establish themselves and continue their progress.

“We want to build a team that grows together, with players who embrace the demands of this Club and take pride in representing Sunderland. Brian has an important part to play in that journey, and we look forward to continuing our work together.”
