Marcus Thuram put the Nerazzurri ahead with an angled finish just before half-time, beating Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 37, added a second in the 80th minute after collecting a pass from Lautaro MartΓnez, who had come on as a substitute following his return from injury.
Inter Milan now sit an unassailable 12 points ahead of second-placed Napoli with three games remaining. It is their third Scudetto in six years and their second under different management, with Cristian Chivu having replaced the departed Simone Inzaghi in the summer.
The result was particularly loaded for Chivu. He coached Parma last season before being called back to the club where he spent eight years as a player, and his first trophy in management arrived against the team he helped keep in Serie A twelve months ago. Vice president Javier Zanetti, speaking to Inter TV after the celebrations on the pitch, was measured and emotional in equal measure.
"It's an emotional night, built on the culture of hard work that defines us, led by a great coach in Cristian, with a group of players who from the very beginning made themselves available and achieved a very important triumph. Being able to celebrate at home, in front of all our supporters, was a great opportunity. This is a title won on merit β the club, the players and the fans stayed united in difficult moments. Once again, stronger than everything and everyone."
He had also posted a message on social media shortly after the final whistle.
"We are the champions of Italy. Nobody will be able to diminish the work that has been done. Winning is always difficult and we did it by overcoming obstacles both on and off the pitch. Today another important page is added to the history of our club."
Zanetti credited Chivu's work throughout the year and singled out the involvement of sporting director Piero Ausilio and a squad that had been written off by many after last season's Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
"The team showed great character all season, stuck together and pushed each other all year long. To win the Scudetto you need to be able to count on everyone, and everyone played a crucial role."
Lautaro, speaking from the pitch in his captain's armband, was equally aware of what the achievement represented after such a difficult twelve months.
"After four great years with Simone, perhaps we needed a change of scenery. Chivu brought fresh energy and enthusiasm. This group has been through a lot. We've been performing at a high level for years, including in Europe, and it's an improvement from last season."
Inter face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final in ten days. A domestic double awaits.
