Xavi Espart explains what Barcelona renewal means to him

“I was born a Barça supporter, and I have been playing for Barça since I was eight years old,” the young defender said in a video shared on social media.

“Thanks to everything the club and La Masia have given me, I have been able to fulfil my first dreams. Defending these colours has always been a source of pride for me, and being able to wear this shirt is a dream.”

Barcelona announced the agreement on Thursday, securing the future of a player who has made rapid progress from the club's academy into Hansi Flick's first-team plans.

Espart arrived at La Masia in 2015 and made his senior debut in March 2026 during the Champions League meeting with Newcastle United. After making six appearances last season, he became a full member of the first-team squad in August.

His involvement has increased during the current campaign, with the defender making five appearances and contributing his first Barcelona goal and two assists.

Espart's new deal reflects the club's confidence in his development, while the player has made clear that he sees the renewal as an opportunity to continue improving rather than a reason to relax.

“Now it's time to keep working, give everything, enjoy it and help take Barça as high as possible,” he said.

The defender's versatility has strengthened his position within the squad. Although he can operate on either side of defence, he has also shown that he can contribute in other roles, giving Flick additional options.

His progress has been particularly striking given how recently he moved into the senior setup. Barcelona are now securing a player who has already begun to turn his opportunities into meaningful contributions.

For Espart, however, the emotional connection remains central to what the contract represents.

The extension will keep him at Barcelona until June 2030, providing continuity as he continues his development at the club where he has spent most of his footballing life.
