Barcelona have agreed a contract extension with academy graduate Xavi Espart until June 2030 after the versatile 19-year-old established himself in Hansi Flick’s first-team plans.

The agreement adds two years to Espart’s previous deal, which was due to expire in 2028. Barcelona confirmed the extension on Thursday, with the formal signing scheduled to take place at the club’s offices in the coming days.

Espart has enjoyed a breakthrough start to the 2026-27 campaign after making six first-team appearances last season. He has since become a regular option for Flick, particularly at left-back, where his performances have put pressure on established alternatives Alejandro Balde and João Cancelo.

The youngster is also capable of playing at right-back and in midfield, giving the Barcelona coach additional flexibility across several positions.

His attacking contribution has strengthened his case for regular involvement. Espart has scored his first senior goal for Barcelona and registered two assists this season, underlining the qualities that attracted Flick’s attention during pre-season.

The defender’s progress is another example of Barcelona’s continued investment in homegrown talent. He joined La Masia in the summer of 2015 from UE Vilassar de Mar, having arrived as a young boy, and has spent more than a decade progressing through the club’s development system.

His senior breakthrough began last season, when Flick gave him opportunities in the first team. Espart made his debut in March 2026 during Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

He subsequently made six appearances during the 2025-26 campaign before joining the first-team group at the start of the new season. Barcelona confirmed him as a full first-team squad member in August.

The new agreement reflects the club’s confidence in his potential and rewards his rapid rise. Espart is part of a generation of young Barcelona players that includes Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal, who have also moved into prominent roles.

For Espart, the immediate challenge is to maintain his level and continue competing for a starting place. His versatility and attacking output have given him a strong platform, while the contract extension provides long-term security as he develops at the club.
