The 25-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023, was presented to the Barcelona and world media on Thursday evening after a nine-hour wait caused by a delay in paperwork. The deal was confirmed at 8.16pm local time.
Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson confirmed that discussions had taken place with a number of Europe's leading clubs before Barcelona secured Gordon's signature. Bayern Munich had been a serious contender but withdrew when the asking price became clear. Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson worked together to maximise the return, inserting performance-related clauses into the agreement.
Newcastle can earn up to €5 million in additional payments if Gordon features in 60 percent of Barcelona's fixtures across five seasons — a threshold he has consistently met throughout his time at St James' Park. A further €5 million is tied to Gordon helping Barcelona win trophies.
Wilson said: "Anthony has been a fantastic professional during his time at Newcastle United. The relationship between him and the club, particularly with Eddie and our players and staff, has been excellent throughout. Anthony has shown real growth and development in his game. That is a reflection of both the environment we strive to create for our players and, importantly, Anthony's own commitment to improving every day."
He added: "There has been interest in Anthony from a number of Europe's leading clubs over a period of time, and the conversations involving the club, led by David Hopkinson and myself, as well as Anthony's representatives, have been conducted confidentially and with a great deal of professionalism on all sides."
Gordon delivered an emotional farewell to Newcastle's supporters in his unveiling address.
"I've loved every single minute of playing for Newcastle, being a part of Newcastle," he said. "It's an incredible club, one I will never forget. I'll be a fan for the rest of my life. I love St James' Park so much, I've loved playing there. We've had so many amazing nights, so many big wins."
"The energy, the fans — it's been so iconic for me. From my first day, the people took to me straight away when they didn't have to. I'll never be able to say thank you enough."
He even addressed the Barcelona media in Spanish at his unveiling, explaining that he had practised the language with a Spanish physiotherapist at Newcastle for precisely this occasion.
Newcastle's net profit on the sale exceeds £24 million at base fee alone, and could reach significantly more if the bonuses are triggered. The deal ranks among the largest sales in the club's history and provides significant funds for Eddie Howe's summer rebuild.
