Asked about the prospect of Barcelona signing a forward, Flick kept his answer open-ended: "It will depend on the team. We have to wait. I have a lot of confidence in Deco, we know we have to do something. It also depends on Ferran. We'll see what happens."
On the possibility of playing without a recognised number nine, he pointed to the options already at his disposal: "It will depend on the squad we have. Lamine played in this position in one or two games with us.
"And I think he's a fantastic player, a world-class player, so he can also adapt to that position. We'll see what happens. Gordon and Adeyemi can play on both wings and also as a nine. So really, we have a lot of options. We'll see what happens."
Quizzed on whether the club needs a new defensive midfielder, Flick struck a similar note of openness without committing to anything: "We're always open to improving the team, we think about what's best for the team. The truth is we have a lot of players in that area, but we'll see what happens in the coming weeks."
The academy has caught his eye during the training camp, and he was generous in his praise of several young players.
"Ebrima Tunkara and (Orian) Goren have surprised me a lot during this stage. They have great quality and they're showing it. Also Xavi Espart, who has made clear, both in matches, we saw it against Birmingham, and in training, that he's a top-level footballer. Héctor is also very good, the loan to Elche was a good move for him. He's committed to us, we'll see what happens..."
Flick was also asked whether there was a danger of complacency after winning the title last season.
"I think champions never stop. They know how to win titles. This is very important. This title has to give them more confidence. They know that when you work hard, when you stay focused every day, in the end it becomes something special. And this is also what we want to achieve this season."
On the training camp itself, at St George's Park, he was full of praise: "It's been a great experience. It's been one of the best stages I've been part of, because of the facilities, because of how close everything is to the pitch..."
Asked specifically about Alejandro Balde's fitness, Flick said: "He's fine, he's progressing step by step. He might be ready for the next match."
And on new signing Jesse Bisiwu, who has only just linked up with the squad, he added: "He arrived recently. He's had very few training sessions with us. He has speed. The plan is for him to train with us."
