Newcastle's difficult summer — already stripped of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, with Bruno Guimaraes on the brink of following them out the door to Arsenal — has left the club digging its heels in over any further exits, complicating Manchester United's pursuit of Lewis Hall as their preferred option at left-back.
Faced with that resistance, the Independent reports Carrick's recruitment team have widened the search to include Arsenal's 19-year-old Lewis-Skelly, a player who has long been on United's radar.
Whether Arsenal would sanction a sale is another matter entirely. A switch was reportedly on the table last season during a spell when Lewis-Skelly had slipped out of Mikel Arteta's plans, but the picture shifted once he clawed his way back into the side, starting four of the club's last six league matches as they wrapped up the title. For now Arsenal regard him as a player worth keeping, though that calculation could change quickly if deals for both Vinicius Jr and Guimaraes go through and squad depth becomes an issue.
Arsenal are more willing to do business elsewhere in order to balance the books, with the club reportedly open to offers for Reiss Nelson, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres, while Christian Norgaard already looks set to complete a move to Everton.
Asked generally about Arsenal's transfer plans for the remainder of the window, manager Mikel Arteta said: "We are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team. That's clear. We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better like anybody else. And you can just see it. The transfer market and our opponents, what we are doing, we won't sit still. And we are very ambitious in what we want to do."
