Goalkeeper Axel Werner has signed a new contract at Elche running until June 2028, with the extension paving the way for the Argentine to spend next season on loan back home at Rosario Central.

The 29-year-old will return to Argentine football for a fresh chapter having already spent several recent seasons out on loan, including spells at Arsenal, two years at Rosario Central, and a stint with Aldosivi.

Werner originally joined Elche as a free agent from Atletico Madrid ahead of the 2021-22 season, but never established himself at the club, making just five appearances across two campaigns โ€” two in his debut season and three the following year โ€” before loan moves took over his career in Spain.

The renewal effectively formalises a pattern that has defined Werner's time on the books at Elche: regular extensions paired with spells away, allowing the club to retain his registration rights while he continues his career elsewhere. With Elche having invested in senior goalkeeping options domestically, a route back into regular first-team contention in Spain looks unlikely for Werner in the near term, making an extended stay in Argentine football the more realistic path for the remainder of his career.

Head coach Martin Anselmi currently has a settled goalkeeping department to call upon at Elche, with the club's other options between the posts giving him little reason to disrupt the pecking order for a player who has rarely featured domestically.

For Rosario Central, meanwhile, welcoming Werner back for another season continues a relationship built on trust in his shot-stopping and his conduct in the dressing room, qualities that have made him a reliable fixture during his previous loan spells at the club even as his path back to regular Spanish football remains uncertain.

Born in Rafaela, Werner began his career in Argentina before making the move to Europe, and his repeated returns to Rosario Central in particular reflect how comfortable he has become there relative to life at Elche, where opportunities have been scarce since his arrival five years ago.
