Getafe are on course for a welcome injection of funds this summer, with Mason Greenwood's expected move from Marseille to Fenerbahce set to trigger a sell-on payment that traces back to the Madrid club's role in reviving his career three years ago.

Reports from Turkey suggest Greenwood is close to completing a switch to Fenerbahce worth around €45m including bonuses, a deal that would represent a major coup for the Turkish side as they prepare to unveil one of the standout attacking talents in their league.

What makes the transfer particularly notable is how many clubs stand to profit from it: as well as Marseille and Manchester United, Getafe are in line for a cut, a legacy of the season they spent hosting Greenwood on loan and helping rebuild his reputation, a move that ultimately allowed United to sell him on to Marseille.

Should the Fenerbahce deal go through, Getafe's share is expected to land in the region of €4m β€” a meaningful sum for a club of their size, and one that adds to an already productive summer on the financial front. The Madrid outfit have already banked fees from the sales of Luis Milla, Mauro Arambarri, Coba da Costa and Peter Federico, and continue to receive a percentage from Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid, giving the club a healthy stream of income to reinvest in this summer's market.

For Greenwood, the switch to Turkey would close out a whirlwind few years that began with his exit from Manchester United, took him through a rehabilitative loan spell in Madrid, and led to a breakout period in Marseille that has now made him one of the most sought-after forwards outside Europe's top five leagues. Getafe's role in that journey, though largely forgotten by outsiders, is set to pay real financial dividends as the transfer edges closer to completion.

The sell-on arrangement is a familiar structure in Spanish football, where clubs that provide a platform for a player's rehabilitation often negotiate a small percentage of any future sale as part of the original loan terms.

For Getafe, it means the Greenwood transfer serves as a reminder that squad decisions made years earlier can still generate income long after a player has moved on, adding another welcome line to the club's accounts without requiring any fresh negotiation this summer.
