The move is a two-year deal reported to be worth around £5m, though neither club has put a figure on it officially. It caps a six-year spell at the Amex during which Welbeck became Brighton's all-time leading top-flight goalscorer, racking up 51 goals and 18 assists since arriving from Watford in 2020 — a tally capped off last season with a career-best haul of 13 Premier League goals from 37 appearances, a return only three English players in the entire division bettered.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom paid tribute to his departing forward: "Danny has made an incredible contribution to Brighton. His performances, goals and experience played a key role in some of the most important moments in our recent history, while his character and leadership made him a hugely respected figure within the club."
The move represents a notable departure from Chelsea's usual transfer strategy under the BlueCo ownership, which has generally prioritised signing players under 25 who can be developed or sold for a profit; it is the first time the club have paid a fee for a player over 26 since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's arrival from Barcelona in 2022. Welbeck joins a growing list of signings for Xabi Alonso's rebuilt squad this summer that includes Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda.
Speaking in his first interview as a Chelsea player, Welbeck did not hide his excitement at the move. Asked what comes to mind when he thinks of Chelsea, his answer was instant.
"Trophies and winning," he said, smiling as he took in the surroundings of Cobham's training ground for the first time as a player. "That philosophy resonates with me because that's something I strive to do every single day. I want to win, to improve, to get better, and it's a club with some great history. Chelsea have won a lot of trophies, and that's something that I really want to strive towards as well."
Welbeck, who was part of Manchester United's Premier League-winning squad as an 18-year-old in 2008-09, credited those early years around senior professionals for shaping the standards he still holds himself to.
"I grew up with winners all around me; there were great characters around me," he said. "I watched my team-mates when I was younger to see how they prepared for training, how they rested, how they relaxed, what they ate and more. Everything comes into it. It's a small compound effect, and it set the example for me, so I've always had high standards. I really do believe that if you keep doing the small things right, over time it becomes something massive, and I'm not going to change in any way. I want to maintain those high standards."
Now 45th on the Premier League's all-time appearance list, Welbeck said he was determined to pass on his experience to Chelsea's younger players while continuing to contribute on the pitch himself.
"I'm coming to the later stage of my career, but I'm as hungry as ever and as passionate as ever, ready to put everything into this next chapter," he said. "Obviously, with age comes experience, and I've got invaluable experience. I've been around the Premier League for a long, long time and I've been at some big clubs.
"With everything that I've experienced in my time as a Premier League footballer, I've learned so much. It's given me such a good outlook about what I can do to help, not just myself, but others around me as well. I've seen a lot, so I've always got a lot of advice for some of the younger players who want to take it on board, and it's amazing to be in this position."
Reflecting on the squad he is joining, Welbeck added: "I think every new chapter brings different challenges and obviously coming to Chelsea Football Club, we've got some incredible talent here. It's such a promising squad; there's so much talent at this football club. I can't wait to get involved." Turning his thoughts to matchday, he said: "I'm buzzing to be here. It's an incredible opportunity. I'm really grateful, thankful, and privileged to be at this big club. I'm really buzzing for this next chapter in my career now."
