Aston Villa are pursuing two young French goalkeepers as potential long-term successors to Emiliano Martínez, with RC Lens keeper Robin Risser and Toulouse's Guillaume Restes both on the club's shortlist.

Footmercato reported that Aston Villa have placed Risser and Restes at the top of their goalkeeper planning following indications that Martínez, 33, could leave this summer despite a contract running until June 2029.

The World Cup winner joined Villa from Arsenal in 2020 for £17million and has made 252 appearances, keeping 78 clean sheets. He came close to leaving last summer and the situation remains unresolved.

Risser, 22, has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in Ligue 1 this season following his move from Strasbourg to Lens. He has kept 10 clean sheets and conceded only 33 goals, earning a nomination for the Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year award and drawing the attention of Didier Deschamps's France coaching staff. Born in Colmar, he came through Strasbourg's academy and had a successful loan at Red Star in Ligue 2 before forcing his way into the Lens first team.

The complication with Risser is that RC Lens are not willing to sell — according to Footmercato, a significant above-market offer would be required to move the Artois club's position.

Restes, also 22, presents a more straightforward acquisition. The Toulouse goalkeeper has already exceeded 100 professional appearances, including 95 in Ligue 1, and won a silver medal with France at the Paris 2024 Olympics under Thierry Henry. His experience level for his age is exceptional and Villa believe he could be ready to step into a top-four Premier League squad immediately.

Villa face competition for Restes from Premier League rivals and clubs in Spain and Germany. His willingness to leave his boyhood club for a major step up is understood to be genuine, making him a more accessible target than Risser.

Martínez remains Villa's first-choice as they prepare for a Europa League final against Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20. Whether he is still their keeper in August is the question driving what has become one of the busiest positions on the European goalkeeper market this summer.
