Jan Paul van Hecke has spoken about his emotional £52 million move to Tottenham, thanking Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman for letting him finalise the transfer during the World Cup before facing Sweden.

Van Hecke has spoken for the first time about his £52m move to Tottenham, a deal that ESPN reports represents a remarkable increase on the £1.8m Brighton paid NAC Breda for him back in 2020.

The overall package, including a sell-on clause, is worth around €60m in total.

Asked at a Netherlands press conference ahead of Saturday's World Cup clash with Sweden how much he would pay for himself, Van Hecke gave a measured response.

"It's always complicated to say things like 'what would I pay for myself'. I'd pay whatever the club is willing to pay. I'm just happy this was possible," Van Hecke said.

"I could say it doesn't affect me at all, but of course I'm proud, because it's fantastic, but it won't change me as a person."

The defender also thanked Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman for allowing the transfer to be finalised during the tournament.

"There were a lot of phone calls and obviously I wasn't involved in all of it the whole time," Van Hecke said. "It was important for me, and the manager gave me the time to focus on this transfer. I'm grateful to him for that because it's a big step forward in my professional career."

He spoke warmly of his time at Brighton while looking ahead to the new challenge.

"I'm happy to have played for my old club. It also increases my confidence. But now I'll be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the UK. It's important for my future. But right now I'm focused on the World Cup here," he said.

The Netherlands drew with Japan in their opening match after conceding a late goal, and now face a Sweden side fresh off an impressive 5-1 win over Tunisia at the start of Group F.
