Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly approached River Plate over Lautaro Pereyra, but the Argentine teenager’s new contract includes a €100 million release clause.

The 18-year-old has attracted attention with his versatility and early progress in senior football, but River have moved to strengthen their negotiating position by extending his contract until December 2029.

Tottenham have made an approach for Pereyra, who can operate in midfield and across several attacking positions. River Plate confirmed on Monday that the youngster had signed a new deal, with club president Stéfano Di Carlo present at the signing.

The extension gives River greater security over one of their emerging academy players. It also leaves interested clubs facing a potentially difficult negotiation, with reports in Argentina stating that Pereyra’s contract carries a €100 million release clause.

Pereyra came through River’s youth system and made his senior debut in April 2026. He has since made 15 first-team appearances, although his playing time remains limited as he competes for a place in an experienced squad.

The midfielder has scored once for River and registered an assist, while his ability to play in several positions has increased his usefulness to the coaching staff. He is most comfortable in midfield but has also been deployed as an attacking midfielder, across the front line and at left wing-back.

River’s decision to extend his deal follows his gradual introduction to senior football. His previous contract was due to expire at the end of 2028, while the new agreement runs through December 2029 and includes improved financial terms.

The €100 million clause was already part of his previous contract and remains in place following the renewal. Although the figure is substantial, it does not necessarily represent the amount River would ultimately accept in negotiations. A club could instead seek a separate agreement with the Argentine side.

Tottenham have previously been linked with River’s young players. During the summer, reports connected the north London club with fellow prospect Ian Subiabre, who subsequently joined Club Atlético Tigre on loan.

Pereyra is now another potential target as Tottenham look towards South America for emerging talent. However, the reported approach has not yet developed into a confirmed bid, and there is no indication that a transfer agreement is close.

The teenager’s limited first-team experience also makes it difficult to assess what fee Tottenham might consider appropriate.

River’s position is strengthened by the extension, while Pereyra has the opportunity to continue developing in familiar surroundings. If Tottenham retain their interest, the two clubs would need to establish whether a deal could be negotiated on terms acceptable to both sides.

A January move or a transfer next summer remains speculative at this stage. For now, Tottenham’s reported approach places Pereyra on their radar, while River have made clear through the new contract that they intend to protect their investment in the teenager’s future.
