Curtis Jones gave Liverpool the lead shortly before the hour mark, but Kevin Schade equalised for the visitors to set up a nervy finish in which Brentford came close to snatching all three points in the 100th minute. The point was enough. Liverpool finish fifth, qualifying for Europe's top club competition for the second successive season under Slot.
The result was overshadowed by the final Anfield appearances of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, both of whom received emotional send-offs from a crowd of more than 60,000.
Slot was reflective but honest at his post-match press conference when asked to assess a campaign that began with a Premier League title defence and ends with a fifth-place finish.
"It's clear and obvious that we wanted more. But I'm really proud of the players, what they've done this season, because it's been a very, very, very tough season for us, with all the things we had to experience, with all the injuries."
He was direct about where the club stands relative to the minimum requirement.
"If qualifying for the Champions League is the minimum for us — fifth place — going out in the FA Cup against the winners after losing an away game to Manchester City, which so many teams do, and losing against Paris Saint-Germain for the second year in a row where no team in the last two years was able to beat them over two games — not what I would have loved us to achieve before we started. But taking everything into account, I'm today happy that we've qualified for the Champions League."
On the game itself, Slot acknowledged a familiar pattern that has defined too much of the season.
"We deserved to win. In the 100th minute we could have even lost it. So many times this season we've seen that before — we were getting chances to make the winner and then in the 10th minute of extra time they got a serious chance. This time it didn't go in. So many times this season it did."
He was asked whether he would look back and feel he could have handled anything differently.
"I haven't been perfect, but I would have answered this question exactly the same in the year we won the league because as a manager you can never be perfect. All the decisions I've made throughout the whole season were made with one idea: being very well prepared. But before I made them, every time it felt they were the right ones to make. Not every one was. If you asked me one word to describe this season — injury."
On the farewell tributes to Salah and Robertson: "Brilliant, as always. They completely got what they deserved. Two legends who in the last nine years won nine trophies here. This club knows how to celebrate a league title, this club knows how to handle tragedies, and this club definitely also knows how to celebrate these two players."
Liverpool begin a significant summer of reconstruction. The replacements for two of their most important players in a generation will need to be found quickly.
