The Egyptian forward, who is leaving Anfield at the end of the season after nine years, came on as a late substitute at Villa Park on Friday evening as Arne Slot's side suffered another damaging result. Liverpool remain at risk of missing out on next season's Champions League, having now lost 12 of their 37 league matches. The defeat also pushed the club beyond their own record for goals conceded in a 38-game Premier League season.
The post referenced Jurgen Klopp's tenure directly through the phrase "heavy metal" football, the term widely associated with the gegenpressing style that defined Liverpool's most successful modern era.
"I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve."
He continued: "I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it."
The statement was liked on Instagram by several Liverpool players, among them Dominik Szoboszlai, Andy Robertson, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike. Midfielder Curtis Jones added a clapping emoji before posting his own message acknowledging a disappointing season had fallen well short of the club's standards.
Salah's relationship with Slot became one of the defining subplots of the season. In December, following a third consecutive match in which he was left on the bench during a 3-3 draw at Leeds United, the forward spoke openly about feeling abandoned by the club and said his relationship with the manager had broken down entirely. He alleged the club had made promises in the summer that were not kept and that he felt he was being made a scapegoat.
Liverpool's board are reported to be planning next season with Slot still in charge and are not pursuing Xabi Alonso, who is understood to be close to joining Chelsea.
Salah is expected to play in Liverpool's final league fixture against Brentford.
