Roger Schmidt has backed RB Leipzig manager Martín Demichelis and dismissed speculation about Julian Nagelsmann returning to the club after their 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

The emphatic victory provided some relief for Demichelis following a difficult start to the Bundesliga campaign, with questions raised about his position after Leipzig's inconsistent results. However, Schmidt, Red Bull's new Head of Global Soccer, insists there is no immediate prospect of a managerial change.

Speaking to ZDF's Sportstudio, Schmidt played down suggestions that Nagelsmann could return to the club where he previously enjoyed considerable success.

“That's normal nowadays. In this business, you always have to deal with these kinds of issues when you lose one or two matches. But we are a long way from that,” Schmidt said.

Asked whether Nagelsmann's name had been discussed internally at Leipzig, he replied: “Do you mean at RB Leipzig? Not that I know of, at least not with me.”

Schmidt took up his new position at the beginning of October, succeeding Jürgen Klopp in overseeing Red Bull's global football strategy. His responsibilities include supporting the group's clubs and establishing a consistent approach across its football operations.

He emphasised that continuity in the dugout remained a priority and that Demichelis would receive the backing needed to implement his ideas.

“We want a certain degree of continuity in the coaching position at all our locations. Our coaches will now receive maximum support, including from us and the global team. That's what we are totally focused on,” Schmidt said.

The Red Bull executive also offered a positive assessment of Demichelis, drawing on his experience of working with Argentine players during his coaching career.

“I have experience with Argentine players, particularly at Benfica, and I like their mentality. Most Argentine players take on leadership roles at their clubs. They bring that extra quality you need to win matches. I have had the same impression of him.

“He is a really nice person and football-mad. I genuinely believe he is the right coach for Leipzig.”

The 6-0 victory over Frankfurt was an important response to the criticism, with Christopher Nkunku scoring a hat-trick and Leipzig producing one of their most convincing performances of the season.

Attention now turns to the Champions League, where Leipzig face PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday. Demichelis's side need a positive result after losing 4-1 to Como in their opening European fixture.

Schmidt's public backing gives the coach some breathing space, but maintaining that support will depend on Leipzig turning their latest performance into a more consistent run of results.
