Adi Hütter tears into Frankfurt defence after 6-0 defeat

Eintracht Frankfurt

Adi Hütter has criticised Eintracht Frankfurt's defending after their 6-0 defeat to RB Leipzig left them with 16 goals conceded in five Bundesliga matches.

The Austrian coach was particularly unhappy with the performance of captain Robin Koch, whom he substituted at half-time after a disastrous opening 45 minutes at the Red Bull Arena.

“From a leader and captain, I simply expect something different. If you concede 16 goals and are the leader in defence, then at some point you have to make a statement. I did not like that at all. I expect more from Robin,” Hütter said.

Eintracht Frankfurt had already conceded four times by the interval, with Christopher Nkunku scoring a first-half hat-trick after Ezechiel Banzuzi had opened the scoring. Antonio Nusa added a fifth in the second half before Tidiam Gomis completed the rout for RB Leipzig late on.

Hütter stressed that Koch could not be held solely responsible for a collective defensive collapse, but he was scathing about the ease with which Leipzig created and converted their chances.

“The goals we conceded were far too easy. If you defend like that here in Leipzig and run into those counter-attacks, then, as far as defending is concerned, it is simply not Bundesliga standard.”

Striker Jonathan Burkardt also questioned the team's response when the match began to unravel, arguing that the players expected to lead the side had failed to take responsibility.

“The leaders have failed again. We lose 6-0 and then the players who are supposed to hold everything together have to step up. We did not manage that. It was tough.”

Burkardt called for a collective improvement, adding that the side had defended carelessly and that every player needed to accept greater responsibility.

Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was equally disappointed with the performance, describing the team's approach to the match as unacceptable and insisting that the result could not be allowed to become a pattern.

Frankfurt's defensive problems are not entirely new. They conceded 13 goals in their first five league matches last season, despite collecting nine points and occupying fourth place at that stage.

The club also allowed several defenders to leave during the summer without bringing in equivalent numbers of established replacements. Otávio and Lilian Brassier were added to the squad, while the full-back positions remain particularly short of natural alternatives.

Hütter will need a rapid response if Frankfurt are to prevent their defensive weaknesses from undermining the rest of their campaign.
