Raphinha weighing Barcelona future after injury-hit season raises doubts

Raphinha is reconsidering his long-term future at Barcelona after a season disrupted by 19 match absences through injury prompted a period of deep personal reflection.

The 29-year-old Brazilian winger has scored 19 goals and contributed eight assists in 31 appearances this season โ€” numbers that underline his quality when fit โ€” but the physical toll of what has been his most injury-affected campaign at the club has introduced uncertainty where previously there was none.

According to Diario Sport, Raphinha has been using his most recent spell on the sidelines to assess whether Barcelona remains the right environment for him heading into the final years of his peak.

He is not expected to make a decision before the end of the season. Barcelona are aware of his thought process and are no longer completely closed to the possibility of a sale, though the club's public position remains that they do not intend to sell him. His contract runs until 2028.

The Saudi Pro League interest is not new. Multiple clubs from the competition approached Barcelona last summer with an offer in the region of โ‚ฌ90 million and a reported salary package worth โ‚ฌ30 million per year for the player โ€” figures that Raphinha acknowledged at the time had genuinely tempted him before a conversation with head coach Hansi Flick persuaded him to stay.

"The offer we had from Saudi Arabia really tempted me. It would have solved not just my personal life but also the lives of my parents, my son โ€” a lot of people."

Raphinha has also recently returned from injury to feature in Barcelona's final La Liga run-in, which serves as a reminder of what he contributes to a squad chasing a second consecutive title. Flick has been careful to manage his workload since his return, bringing him off the bench in Saturday's 2-1 win at Osasuna rather than starting him.

For Barcelona, any departure would generate significant transfer income at a time when the club still faces financial constraints.

Whether Raphinha ultimately decides to test himself in a new environment or stay and add to a title collection that already includes a domestic treble will be one of the most consequential decisions of the summer.
