Nyland, 35, has been without a club since his contract at Sevilla expired earlier this summer, but according to Sky Sports he has now agreed a deal with RB Leipzig, with only a medical left before he can be presented. If completed, it will be the second time Nyland has represented the German club, having previously spent the 2022-23 season there as a free-agent signing.
The move caps a remarkable summer for Nyland, who was Norway's first-choice goalkeeper as the country reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, producing a string of vital saves in knockout wins over Ivory Coast and Brazil before a costly error against England in the last eight, when he spilled a fierce Morgan Rogers strike.
Despite that reserve status at Sevilla behind Odysseas Vlachodimos, head coach Stale Solbakken kept faith with Nyland throughout Norway's campaign, and his performances on the biggest stage appear to have played a significant role in persuading Leipzig to move for him.
Leipzig have been searching for experienced goalkeeping cover after long-serving Peter Gulacsi's expected departure for Villarreal, with 24-year-old Maarten Vandevoordt having taken over as first choice towards the end of last season.
Nyland, who also had spells at Aston Villa, Norwich City and Bournemouth earlier in his career, would provide senior competition and depth behind the Belgian as Leipzig prepare for a season that includes Champions League football following their third-place finish in the Bundesliga.
Norway's run to the World Cup quarter-finals was itself a landmark achievement for a country that had not appeared at a major tournament in decades, and Nyland's performances throughout played a significant part in that success.
Having started five of Norway's six matches, his standout display came in the win over Brazil, a result many pointed to as the moment the tournament shifted in Norway's favour.
That the 35-year-old now finds himself a wanted man at a Champions League club, rather than searching for a route back into regular football, says much about how far his stock has risen over the course of a single summer.
