Sunderland have reaffirmed their support for Régis Le Bris despite their poor start to the season, with the club prepared to strengthen his squad in January.

The Black Cats have no intention of dismissing the Frenchman and continue to regard him as central to their long-term plans, despite a sequence of results that has left them bottom of the Premier League.

Sunderland have lost four of their last five league matches, with Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Coventry adding to the pressure following disappointing performances against Bournemouth and Brighton.

However, the club believes the situation remains recoverable and that Le Bris retains the confidence of his players.

Senior figures, including owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and director of football Florent Ghisolfi, are understood to be united in their backing of the head coach.

There is also a belief that the dressing room remains firmly behind him, with senior players continuing to support the manager despite the frustration surrounding the team's domestic form.

Sunderland decided to make their position clear on Monday to prevent further speculation about Le Bris' future. The club's preferred response is to maintain stability, accept collective responsibility and give the squad time to address its problems.

That approach reflects the credit Le Bris built during his first season in the Premier League, when he guided Sunderland to a seventh-place finish following promotion.

The club also points to its performances in European competition and progress into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as evidence that the team remains capable of competing. Sunderland are unbeaten in their Europa League campaign, offering a contrast to their struggles in the domestic league.
