The 40-year-old, who is coming off a disappointing World Cup with Germany this summer, is expected to face greater competition from understudy Jonas Urbig after another season in which he carried the bulk of the workload for Bayern Munich, making 37 appearances, conceding 40 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets as the club won a domestic treble of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and German Super Cup before exiting the Champions League at the semi-final stage.
Speaking to Bild, Neuer confirmed his intention to retire next summer: "I don't play the matches just to say, 'this is my last match,' even if it might be the last time I set foot on a stadium pitch. But it certainly looks like I'm going to retire.
"I would probably have stopped in 85% of cases (at the end of last season), but it's simply a pleasure to play in this team, with this coaching staff. We always have the chance to compete for every trophy. We are at the top of our game collectively.
"That's why this team, this squad and the structure we have at the club are among the 15% for which I said to myself: I absolutely have to continue. It's simply a pleasure."
Neuer has made 545 appearances for Bayern since joining from Schalke, where he spent five seasons, in the summer of 2011, and this will be his 21st campaign in the Bundesliga overall. He has previously announced his retirement from international football on two separate occasions, only to be recalled, most recently by Julian Nagelsmann for this summer's World Cup.
Should his prediction hold true, Neuer's ideal finale would come at the 2027 Champions League final, scheduled to be held on 5 June at Atlético Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium. He was quick to praise the club's wider goalkeeping department, including back-up Sven Ulreich and Urbig, as he prepares to help ease the transition to his eventual successor: "We'll support one another; we've got a strong goalkeeping squad. The important thing is that we help one another, that we push each other, and that we can always give our best for the team in goal."
