The club does hold a unilateral option to extend the agreement by a year, to 30 June 2028, and has already shown its hand once this year by rejecting interest from MLS side New York City FC in the early summer.
The Athletic reports that Milan's intention is to keep the 28-year-old beyond his current terms regardless of the delay in formal negotiations, with the club, unbeaten and fifth in Serie A, said to be planning around a three-year horizon under an increasingly hands-on Gerry Cardinale.
Pulisic has been central to that plan on the pitch. He provided the assist for Diego Moreira's opener in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, having already been a key figure in the 3-0 win over Lecce the previous matchday, when he scored AC Milan's second goal.
He was left out of the United States squad for upcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Canada and Mexico, a decision made by head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
