David Silva marked his return to competitive football by scoring from the penalty spot on his debut for Supreme Sha Tin, although his side were held to a 1-1 draw by BC Rangers.

The former Manchester City and Spain midfielder had announced his retirement in 2023, but returned to the pitch on Saturday for a high-profile appearance in Hong Kong’s top flight.

Silva opened the scoring after 56 minutes, converting a penalty to put Supreme Sha Tin ahead in front of a sell-out crowd at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground. It was an unusual new chapter for a player who enjoyed an illustrious career at the highest level of European football.

The 40-year-old played 84 minutes and was named man of the match for his contribution. However, Supreme were unable to hold on to their advantage, with BC Rangers equalising 10 minutes after Silva's goal.

Yakubu Nassam Ibrahim found the net to make it 1-1, ensuring that Silva's comeback appearance ended with a share of the points rather than a victory.

The match attracted 4,593 supporters, the first sell-out in the 20-month history of Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground. Silva's presence was a major attraction, bringing a World Cup winner and one of the most celebrated midfielders of his generation to the Hong Kong Premier League.

Silva's return is particularly notable given the length of time since he last played professionally. He announced his retirement after a career that included spells at Valencia and Manchester City, as well as a highly successful period with the Spanish national team.

At Manchester City, he became a central figure in the club's rise under Pep Guardiola, winning four Premier League titles and establishing himself as one of the outstanding creative midfielders of the modern era. He was also part of Spain's World Cup-winning team in 2010 and their European Championship triumphs in 2008 and 2012.

His appearance for Supreme Sha Tin was a guest outing rather than confirmation of a full-time return to professional football. Nevertheless, scoring on his first appearance provided a memorable moment for both the player and the supporters who turned out to see him.

For Silva, the occasion offered a chance to experience competitive football again after announcing his retirement three years ago. For Hong Kong football, it was an opportunity to welcome one of the game's most recognisable names to its domestic competition.
