The Athletic Club winger put his side ahead in the 84th minute, but Osasuna rescued a point when Catena scored a late equaliser in the 90th minute. The goal left Athletic coach Edin Terzic disappointed that his players had not protected their advantage.
“We could not clear that final cross. In that duel, inside the area, it was 50-50,” Terzic said. “My feeling is that we have lost two points because I think we deserved a better result in the second half. But when you are only one goal ahead, we know situations can change.”
Terzic felt Athletic had missed the opportunity to settle the match before Osasuna’s equaliser.
“We failed to take the chance to score the second goal in the final minutes. Then we lost the ball and could not find a way to clear it,” he said. “We could have scored in the move before, but they took the ball from us because they keep going right until the last minute. We have to learn from those mistakes so that we do not repeat them.”
The coach also discussed the importance of Nico Williams, whose impact grew after the interval. Terzic said Athletic had not found the winger often enough in the first half, but made adjustments at the break.
“We all know Nico’s quality and how important he is for Athletic and the national team,” he said. “In the first half, we did not get him the ball as often as we would have liked. We spoke about it at half-time and corrected it. It is not only what he does with the ball, but how he opens up the pitch for his team-mates.”
Terzic added that Williams felt a cramp after scoring, but did not believe it indicated an injury.
Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate viewed the point more positively, particularly after his side had suffered two consecutive defeats.
“Right now, it feels like a huge point. We fought hard, made a mistake and conceded the goal, but the team produced a response with the support of the crowd,” he said. “It is important psychologically.”
Arrasate nevertheless made clear that Osasuna needed to improve with the ball, despite being encouraged by their defensive work and competitiveness.
“In attacking possession, we are making mistakes. It is difficult in this division when you do that,” he said. “We have work to do. Defensively, in duels and in wide areas, we were better. Today we needed that, but we also have to improve with the ball.”
