Borussia Dortmund's priority target remains Konstantinos Karetsas, though an agreement with KRC Genk has yet to be reached for the 18-year-old, with the Belgian club holding out for €35million.
Alongside that pursuit, the Bundesliga club appear to have identified a second option further afield. Legendary German international Lothar Matthäus revealed on his Bild show "Lothar legt los" that Dortmund have shown interest in Mexican teenager Gilberto Mora.
"Mora, the 17-year-old Mexican, played four games at this World Cup," Matthäus said.
"Seventeen years old, this huge talent from Mexico is already on the radar of many European clubs. I've also heard that Borussia Dortmund have put out some feelers."
Mora, who can operate either as a number 10 or on the left wing, is contracted to Club Tijuana until 2029. As part of that extension, the Mexican club included a special release clause specifically designed to allow the 12-times-capped international to move to Europe should the right offer arrive.
Whether Dortmund will turn their reported interest into a concrete approach remains to be seen. Mora's eye-catching performances at the World Cup are likely to have put him firmly on the radar of numerous clubs across the continent, and he will not come cheap regardless of who eventually moves for him.
This is not the first time Mora's name has been linked with a big move. Back in October, both Real Madrid and Barcelona were reported to have shown interest in the teenager, prompting his agent Rafaela Pimenta to play down suggestions that he could be signed on the cheap.
"For 15 million you can't even get a leg from Gilberto," Pimenta joked at the time, underlining just how highly his camp already valued him even before his World Cup exploits pushed his profile higher still.
With Dortmund still working to close a deal for Karetsas and Mora attracting interest from elsewhere in Europe, it remains unclear whether either pursuit will develop into anything more concrete before the transfer window closes, though the club's need for fresh attacking options is unlikely to ease any time soon.
Both targets illustrate the direction Dortmund appear to be heading this summer, prioritising young, technically gifted attackers over the age of 30 they have just lost in Brandt. Karetsas has been the clear priority throughout the window, but Matthäus's intervention suggests the club's scouting network is casting a wider net, with Mora's versatility, capable of playing centrally or out wide, offering an alternative route to solving the same problem should the Genk talks continue to stall.
